BaySport Pilates
What is BaySport Pilates?
BaySport's Pilates Program incorporates the eight principles of Joseph Pilates' unique method of physical and mental conditioning. Joseph
Pilates had been asthmatic as a child, motivating him to improve his strength and physique. His study of yoga and the martial arts, and his work with
physicians and nurses led to the development of his conditioning system. By the early 1960's, Pilates was sought after by George Ballanchine, Martha Graham, New
York City Ballet dancers, actors, gymnasts, and figure skaters.
What is Pilates-Based Method?
The Pilates-Based Method focuses on postural symmetry, abdominal
and spine stabilization, mind/body control, and strengthening
through the full range of motion of all joints. Instead of isolating
muscle groups, the "whole body" is trained, integrating the upper
and lower extremities with the trunk.
How will this benefit me?
- Pilates is a safe and effective form of exercise for the rehabilitation of orthopedic and sports related injuries
- Pilates assist in a rapid and safe return to your activity (i.e. golf or tennis) after an injury or surgery
- Pilates will enhance your performance by providing the ability to uncover isolated weaknesses and imbalances throughout the body
- It is able to provide a wide range of assistance as needed and maintain weight bearing precautions with post surgical patients
- It provides both closed and open chained exercise opportunities
- It teaches correct body alignment to promote good body mechanics and posture
What am I exercising on?
The Pilates-Based Method uses a variety of apparatus specifically
designed to offer both assistance and resistance through spring
tension. Three different types of apparatus may be used including
Reformers, a Trapeze Table, and a Combo Chair. A variety of
exercises will be performed on each piece of equipment offering a
wide variety of assistance as needed and progressing to resistance
work as tolerated. Additional props may be used to challenge your
balance including balls, foam rollers, wobble boards and rotating
discs.
